1.) Our Land, Our People, 1948

This painting resembles the social agenda for the Chinese during the woodcut movement. It shows what life was like in the 1940's- post-war life in the cosmopolitans. Shanghai benefits only the rich.

4.) Sanmao Follows the Army, 1946
By: Zhang Leping (Chinese, 1910-1992)
This is one of the longest-running strips that have now turned into a cartoon. Sanmao means 'three hairs'. In this strip, it shows people taking revenge on a Japanese soldier, and his reward for it, which was a watch that was too big.
The artist was inspired by his own experience in war.

6.) Figure of Deity; Lui Hai and His Toad, 1850-1900
(China/ Qing Dynasty, 1644-1911)
God of wealth dances on a three-legged toad while waving a string of coins. The Chinese worshipped him in hopes of wealth.
















7.) Baluster Vase with Three-Star Gods
Qing Dynasty, (1662-1722)
This is called a 'ping', which is another word for vase. To the Chinese, vases often resembled peace. This beautiful vase consists of three important Gods, such as
A.) The God of Blessing (left)
B.) The God of Wealth/Rank (center)
C.) The God of Longetivity ( right)






8.) Taoist Figure- Emperor Guan
Ming Dynasty (1368-1644)
Military hero Guanyu or Guan Gung is known as The God of War. He was worshipped as protector against all threats to the individual and the state. He resembled loyalty and bravery. He wears a gold crown and military cloak. This statue is found in nearly every Cantonese restaraunt in San Francisco.

This God resembles overcoming obstacles, as well as the lover of art and literature.
















12.) Shiva
Vedic period
Shiva represents all three aspects of the Trimurti- creator, preserver, and ultimate destroyer.






















13.) Krishna
Yadu Dynasty
Krishna is the incarnation of Vishnu. Krishna is an compassionate and loving God and is held as the favorite amongst the Hindus.
